The 2025 competition will represent the field of English and North American Language and Literature and opened January 1, 2025.
Named in honor of the first president of the Council of Graduate Schools and first presented in 1972, this award is made annually to a scholar-teacher in the humanities.
The recipient must be teaching at a U.S. or Canadian university, have earned a doctorate within 7 years of the award date, and have written a book of scholarly importance in that same timeframe. The committee adopted a seven-year cycle in regard to fields of competition. Awards have been made in classical studies and archaeology, English and North American language or literature, world language and literature, comparative literature, drama/theater arts. art history, criticism, conservation and musicology, linguistics, and philosophy, religious studies, and history.
Important Guidance on Field Eligibility:
Nomination that is interdisciplinary are welcome, so long as the book draws heavily from the methods and scholarship of the current year’s field of competition English and North American Language and Literature, nominations due April 30, 2025. Reminder: Both the nomination form and a letter that the nominator elaborates upon the scholarly contribution made by the nominee’s book must be included together, the three copies of the book can be sent separately from the institution or publisher.
Nomination Deadline
All nominations need to be submitted by April 15, 2025, by 5 PM PST. This internal deadline allows the WSU committee time to select the top nominee to send to WAGS.
Nomination Procedure
The Graduate School committee will establish an internal selection process, and the top nomination will be sent to WAGS for competition at the regional level.
The review status for all nominations will be communicated no later than October 1st, 2025.
