International Student English Proficiency Exams

Degree Description:

Regular physical activity and proper nutrition are the cornerstones of health promotion and chronic disease prevention. The teaching and research foci of the NEP graduate programs provide advanced training in both disciplines. As a department in the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, and with a strong network of clinical and community partner organizations throughout Eastern Washington and beyond, we are well placed to provide training and research opportunities for students interested in clinical and community-based approaches to improving population health.

The MS NEP degree offers students of all undergraduate disciplines a pathway into nutrition and exercise physiology education and training, preparing them for careers in industry, academe, and public health, or further preparation for the PhD degree. In this two-year program, students will work closely with faculty members on a research topic in the broad fields of nutrition and exercise physiology. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and complete all prerequisite courses prior to entry into the program.

Admission Requirements:

MS NEP students select one of three tracks once in the program: Combined, Human Nutrition, or Exercise Physiology. Applicants to the MS NEP must complete the following courses before officially entering the program. A minimum of 1 quarter or 1 semester is required.

  • Exercise Physiology (for Combined or Exercise Physiology track)
  • Nutrition (for Combined or Human Nutrition track)
  • General Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Physiology

Generally, all prerequisite coursework should be no more than seven years old at the time of application. However, each situation is reviewed individually.

 

ADDITIONAL ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
  • 3.0 overall GPA in undergraduate degree
  • 3.0 average in prerequisite courses
  • No individual prerequisite course with less than a C grade (C- not accepted)

    • Suggested Guidance: Please provide a statement that introduces yourself and motivations for advanced graduate training. Summarize your undergraduate education and any graduate work you’ve done so far. Describe how your work or life experiences relate to your academic journey and your long-term goals, and how our program will help you achieve those goals. 250-500 words.
  3. Research Interest Statement
    • Suggested Guidance: Provide a summary of your past or current research (e.g., what are the key questions in your research project?). What did you find? Do you have experience with grant funding? Did your work lead to academic publications or presentations? This statement should also describe your current research interests, even if only in general terms, and/or which faculty in our program align with your interests or are engaged in research you may be interested in pursuing. 250-500 words.
  4. 3 letters of recommendation
    • Two must be from academic references (professors or lab instructors), and one from a professional reference (work or volunteer supervisor)
  5.  TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo language proficiency exam scores

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is no longer required for admission to the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology.
