Degree Description:

Master of Science (M.S.) Degree Options
The Master of Science (M.S.) degree provides an important pathway for students seeking advanced training in chemistry through either a thesis or non-thesis option. The M.S. degree recognizes achievement in graduate-level scholarship, research, and professional development within the chemical sciences.

Students in both the thesis and non-thesis programs conduct a research project under the supervision of a Chemistry Department faculty member. Through this experience, students develop expertise in modern experimental techniques, scientific problem-solving, data analysis, and professional communication while gaining firsthand experience in a research laboratory environment. M.S. students are expected to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Department, including seminars, colloquia, research presentations, and other scholarly activities.

M.S. Thesis Option
The thesis option is intended for students seeking intensive research training and is particularly well suited for those considering doctoral study or research-focused careers. Students conduct original research, prepare a written thesis that documents their findings, and defend their work before a faculty committee. Successful completion of the thesis demonstrates the student’s ability to independently design and execute research projects and contribute to the advancement of chemical knowledge.

M.S. Non-Thesis Option
The non-thesis option provides students with advanced research and professional training while offering greater flexibility in program completion. Students complete a faculty-supervised research project and fulfill additional coursework or program requirements in lieu of a formal thesis. This option is designed for students seeking to strengthen their scientific expertise, enhance their professional qualifications, or prepare for careers in industry, education, government, or related fields.

Pathway to the Ph.D.
The M.S. degree can serve as a strong foundation for doctoral studies. Students who demonstrate excellence in coursework, research productivity, and scientific communication during their M.S. program are well positioned to pursue a Ph.D. degree. The research experience, technical skills, and scholarly development gained through either the thesis or non-thesis track provide valuable preparation for the advanced research and independent inquiry that characterize doctoral education. Many students use the M.S. degree as a steppingstone to successful admission into Ph.D. programs at WSU or other leading research institutions.

Student Opportunities:

We offer opportunities for both MS Thesis and MS Non-Thesis students. The MS Thesis option is ideal for students interested in conducting research and pursuing careers in research or further graduate studies. The MS Non-Thesis option provides advanced coursework and professional training for students seeking to enhance their skills and industry experience. Both programs are available at WSU Pullman and are currently accepting applications.

Career Opportunities:

We offer both MS Thesis and MS Non-Thesis opportunities at WSU Pullman. The MS Thesis program prepares students for research-intensive careers and doctoral studies through faculty-mentored research and thesis work. The MS Non-Thesis program emphasizes advanced coursework and professional development, preparing graduates for leadership and technical positions in industry, government, and private organizations. Both pathways provide excellent opportunities for career advancement and professional growth.

Career Placements:

Graduates of our MS Thesis and MS Non-Thesis programs are employed in leading industries, government agencies, consulting firms, and research institutions. The programs prepare students for technical leadership roles, research and development positions, and further graduate study, providing strong pathways for career advancement.
