Degree Description:

The Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence prepares students to design, implement, and evaluate artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions for complex real-world problems. Students build advanced knowledge in artificial intelligence foundations and subfields such as machine learning, neural networks, computer vision, generative AI, reinforcement learning, optimization, robotics, and applied AI.

The program offers thesis and non-thesis options. Students may pursue research-focused study through the thesis option or complete an applied non-thesis pathway that emphasizes advanced coursework, projects, and professional preparation. Coursework supports both foundational AI training and use-inspired applications across engineering, science, industry, and interdisciplinary fields.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must meet the Graduate School’s admission requirements and should have academic preparation appropriate for graduate study in artificial intelligence. The program is designed for students with backgrounds in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, or related engineering and science disciplines.

Students from non-computer-science backgrounds may be required to complete preparatory coursework to support success in the program. Undergraduate coursework assigned to address admission deficiencies may not be counted toward the degree.

An accelerated BS + MSAI (4+1) pathway is available to qualified WSU students.

Before undertaking graduate study in Artificial Intelligence, the student should have completed a Bachelors or baccalaureate degree substantially similar to the BSCS, BS SE, BS Cyber-Security degree described in our Schedule of Classes .

An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is a minimum for admission to the MS program.

This program is similar to the Masters in Artificial Intelligence Project Option with 30 credits and allows using up to six credits of graded coursework from the bachelor’s degree.

The Accelerated BS + MSAI (4+1) program is intended for WSU students only, enrolled in the BS in Computer Science, BS in Computer Engineering, BS in Software Engineering, and BS in Cybersecurity programs who wish to obtain both a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in an accelerated manner. The program allows qualified students to begin graduate coursework during their senior undergraduate year and complete the MSAI degree with an estimated additional year of study, although some students may need three semesters to complete all degree requirements including coursework and the graduate AI capstone project.

This program is available with project option only.

Credit Sharing

Up to six credits of coursework may satisfy the requirements for both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees, subject to University and Graduate School regulations.

Several MSAI core courses have undergraduate counterparts that may have been completed during the student’s bachelor’s degree program.

Interested candidates will need to apply through myWSU.

Please contact your undergraduate advisors for more information.

Student Opportunities:

Students in the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence develop advanced skills through graduate coursework, research, applied projects, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. Areas of study may include artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural network design, computer vision, generative AI, reinforcement learning, distributed machine learning, randomized algorithms, computational genomics, network science, optimization, robotics, and AI for engineering applications.

Students in the thesis option complete independent research and a thesis defense. Students in the non-thesis option complete a final portfolio-based examination that may include representative course projects, professional materials, and a written response to an assigned research paper. Both options help students strengthen technical depth, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and preparation for employment or further graduate study.

Career Opportunities:

Graduates are prepared for careers that require advanced artificial intelligence, machine learning, software, data, and applied computing skills. Career areas may include AI engineering, machine learning engineering, software development, data science, computer vision, robotics, cybersecurity, digital health, agricultural technology, advanced manufacturing, smart grid systems, and AI-enabled research and development.

AI expertise is increasingly relevant across technology, engineering, science, health, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and other industries. Students may apply their training in both core technology roles and interdisciplinary settings where AI tools are used to solve complex practical problems.

Career Placements:

Graduates of the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence will be prepared to pursue positions in technology companies, research organizations, engineering firms, public agencies, health and science organizations, and industries using AI-enabled systems. The program also supports students interested in doctoral study, applied research, and advanced technical leadership.

Washington’s AI-related job market shows strong growth in areas connected to software development, computer systems analysis, information systems management, machine learning, and related AI positions. Employers posting AI-related positions in Washington include major technology companies as well as organizations applying AI in specialized fields.
