Degree Description:

The College of Education offers a Master of Science (M.S.) in Kinesiology. Students are able to chose either a thesis option (typically for those pursuing a research degree and possibly a Ph.D. program or medical school) or a non-thesis option (typically for those seeking work as a practitioner in healthcare or coaching). The program is a full-time two year degree program.

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. The Kinesiology graduate program provides advanced education in human movement and foundational research skills that can be applied to its understanding. Students are trained to ask important questions, find the answers to those questions, and understand the broader implications of the question and answer. Students will leave our graduate program with an appreciation for the abilities of the human body and science in general.

Admission Requirements:

01. A WSU Graduate School general application (including application fee). In GradCAS search for Washington State University – Master of Science in Kinesiology (choose the thesis or non-thesis degree).

02. Current resume or vitae documenting your educational attainments, professional experiences (including part-time and student work), and highlighting any sport-related and sport-management-related work and/or research experience.

03. Letter of Intent (suggested length: approx. 500 words) that includes the following elements:

  • the reason for pursuing a kinesiology graduate degree,
  • a description of relevant research or professional experiences,
  • a specific research or area of interest and whether you are applying for a thesis or non-thesis degree. If applying for a thesis degree please specify the faculty member you have already been in contact with and who has agreed to serve as your thesis advisor, and, if applying for a teaching assistantship,
  • why you would be an effective teacher at the college level and what relevant teaching related experiences you may have.

04. Three letters of referencetwo of which must be from former professors and address academic qualifications (If you graduated with your bachelor’s degree more than 5 years ago, please provide three professional letters addressing your abilities in the following skills: communication, interpersonal, leadership, resourcefulness, time management, and self-directedness). Once you have submitted your online application, your references will be contacted by the College.net service via email with directions for submitting their letters of recommendation.

05. Complete Educational History and Transcripts from any colleges/universities:

  • Where any degrees have been granted or are expected.
  • That show any graded bachelor’s work and/or graduate-level work (including doctoral) taken after the bachelor’s degree.
  • Unofficial copies may be uploaded with your Graduate School application for application review.
  • If admitted, you will be required to submit official copies to the WSU Graduate School.

06. International Students must meet the university’s English proficiency and funding requirements. Please view the current requirements.

07. OPTIONAL: A copy of official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores.

08. Additional information that may support your application. The Kinesiology program values prerequisite knowledge in the following areas: neuroscience, bioengineering, biology, health and wellness, psychology, sociology. Evidence of prerequisite knowledge may consist of prior coursework or work experience judged adequate by the Kinesiology faculty. If you possess knowledge in one or more of these areas that may not be evident in your transcripts or resume, please provide a brief typewritten explanatory statement. Also include any relevant practical and/or research experience.

The Graduate School at Washington State University requires applicants to have achieved a minimum undergraduate cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 (B Average). If your GPA is below a 3.00, please include a brief statement explaining the circumstances and indicating why you believe you will be able to maintain a graduate-level GPA above a 3.00 if you are granted and exception to this requirement.

Work with faculty in such areas as research, evaluation, and measurement may include, for example, opportunities to:

  • Use state-of-the-art equipment to make scientific and medical discoveries,
  • Improve health and wellness in society through work with employer or community programs,
  • Have some influence on individuals through consultation on specific injury prevention or performance enhancement practices.

Other opportunities may include: internships in testing, research, or assessment with hospitals, research centers, and in industry.

Career Opportunities:

Technician positions in human research laboratories or in the human performance industry, management in health and wellness settings, and teaching positions.
