Dear Colleagues,
We would like to share an important update regarding Social Security Number (SSN) processing for new international students this fall. Despite our efforts to arrange on-campus SSN services, including outreach to the Social Security Administration (SSA) offices in Lewiston and Spokane, collaboration with WSU Government Relations, and joint advocacy with the University of Idaho, the SSA has confirmed they do not have the staffing or budget to travel to campus or pre-reserve appointment slots for our students this year. Unfortunately, this means:
- The SSA will not visit campus for in-person SSN processing.
- They are not permitting group transportation or coordinated appointment blocks.
- Students or Departments must secure individual appointments directly by calling the SSA office at 1-877-405-9796.
The Lewiston SSA office does accommodate some same-day and limited walk-in appointments. However, we anticipate high demand in August. Students and departments are encouraged to plan ahead accordingly. Given budget and staffing constraints within our own office, we are also unable to facilitate transportation or appointment scheduling for students. We understand this may pose challenges and appreciate your partnership in supporting new students through the updated process. To support departments Payroll Services and HRS are aware of the situation and will assist where possible with TPPN setups for students awaiting SSNs.
Only the SSA Lewiston office requires a wet signature along with a DSO stamp on an employment verification letter (template here). Therefore, the below instructions should not affect non-Pullman students:
- We will only receive the SS letter in person. Campus mail is not an option to receive letters from departments or students. Likewise, pick up will also need to be in person.
- As our office can only stamp letters after verifying the student’s arrival to the U.S. and enrollment, these must be submitted to our office for processing at least 3-5 business days prior to the student appointment at SSA. If departments prefer to drop off letters well in advance, please note they will not get processed until we verify the student’s arrival and enrollment accordingly.
Please don’t hesitate to contact our office with any questions. We greatly appreciate your understanding and continued collaboration as we support our new international students.
