Graduate Student Prestigious Fellowship Workshop

September 1, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE PRESENTS:

GRADUATE STUDENT PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIP WORKSHOP

Dr. Michael Kahn, Institute of Biological Chemistry, CAHNRS

This –VIRTUAL– event is free for graduate and undergraduate students, as well as for faculty

You are invited to attend the free and virtual Graduate Student Prestigious Fellowship Workshop! This workshop will walk you through the process of applying for major prestigious fellowships but will focus more than it has in previous years on concepts that can help in writing proposals in a way that they are more likely to be successful. Writing about your science and scientific objectives is important. Writing fellowship proposals usually also includes a section where you need to relate your immediate ambitions to your past history and accomplishments, so understanding how to create a persuasive narrative is important. The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships (NSF GRF) are not the only game in town, but much of what they want is typical and writing an NSF GRF proposal can position you for other possibilities.

Applications for the NSF GRF are due in mid-October. General instructions, including eligibility information, can be found at https://www.nsfgrfp.org/. Undergraduates can apply as seniors and again as graduate students. Graduate students can apply only once, either in their first or second year. (Check eligibility criteria.) The web site for NSFGRF proposals will open in late July or early August and you can register any time after that. You will need to write a research plan and a personal statement, provide information about your academic history and have letters of recommendation sent for review. For those that wish it, we will also try to help by giving editorial feedback on your preliminary drafts and answer questions about the process.

Before attending the Graduate Student Prestigious Fellowship Workshop, we encourage you to watch the following video. This video, from a workshop about 3 years ago, will help you:

  • Prepare for the Graduate Student Prestigious Fellowship Workshop
  • Get you thinking about applying for a fellowship
  • Give you some idea about what a fellowship can do for you
  • Present information about applying for a fellowship
  • Give you ideas about how to improve your chances between now and when you apply

**This event will be offered via Zoom only

Please register for this virtual event by clicking the link below. The PDI will email you a web link before the event.
