Medical Leave Options for ASEs

There are two distinct types of medical leave available to Academic Student Employees, depending on whether the leave pertains to their academic enrollment or their employment.

  1. Graduate Medical Leave
    • This leave applies when a graduate student must take time away from their academic program due to a health condition. Graduate Medical Leave is granted by semester, and students approved for this type of leave are not eligible to hold an assistantship during the leave period. See Graduate School Policies and Procedures for more information.
  2. Employment Medical Leave
    • This leave applies when an ASE needs to take three or more days off from their assistantship duties for health-related reasons. In these cases, ASEs must report the time as paid leave (using available sick leave or vacation time) or as leave without pay (LWOP) if no paid leave is available. This type of leave pertains specifically to the employment appointment, not to the student’s academic enrollment.
