NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Amount: $34,000, plus tuition and healthcare for three years

Eligibility:Applicants must have completed less than three semesters of graduate school.

Description: The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) provides Fellowships to individuals selected early in their graduate careers based on their demonstrated potential for significant achievements in science and engineering. Three years of support is provided by the program for graduate study that leads to a research-based master’s or doctoral degree in science or engineering (see Fields of Study in Appendix for examples).

The program goals are 1) to select, recognize, and financially support individuals early in their careers with the demonstrated potential to be high achieving scientists and engineers, and 2) to broaden participation in science and engineering of underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and veterans. GRFP is a critical program in NSF’s overall strategy to develop the globally-engaged workforce necessary to ensure the Nation’s leadership in advancing science and engineering research and innovation. The ranks of NSF Fellows include numerous individuals who have made transformative breakthrough discoveries in science and engineering, become leaders in their chosen careers, and been honored as Nobel laureates.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship

Amount: $24,000, expenses paid to at least on Conference of Ford Fellows, Access to Ford Fellow Liaisons

Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in doctoral programs and have at least 3 years of study remaining until graduation.

Description: In 2015, the Ford Fellowship program will award approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships. The predoctoral fellowships provide three years of support for individuals engaged in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree.
Predoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards will be made to individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Eligibility: Applicants must have completed less than two full years of graduate study.

Description: As a means of increasing the number of U.S citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships per year. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advances training in science and engineering.

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to an area of DoD interest within one of the fifteen following disciplines: aeronautical and astronautical engineering, biosciences, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences, computer and computational sciences, electrical engineering, geosciences, materials science and engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, oceanography, and physics.

The Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship

Amount: $6,000 – $38,000/year, for up to 5 years

Ratio (awards/applicants): 1/30

Eligibility: Must be a senior undergraduate student or first year graduate student in pursuit of their doctoral degree.

Description: The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the participating schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among participating schools.

Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological, and engineering sciences who are citizens of permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering

Amount: $20,000 expense allowance;  tuition; allows a fellow also to hold a research or teaching assistantship; includes one or two paid summer internships with a government agency. Renewable for up to 6 years.

Ratio (awards/applicants):

Eligibility: Applicant must have at least two years remaining of graduate school.

Description: The National Physical Science Consortium is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. Eligible topics of interest include: astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, materials science, mathematics, and physics.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Amount: $25,000 stipend and up to 50% of applicant’s tuition and fees for up to two years

Eligibility: Students must not be in their third year of graduate study or later.

Description: The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans program honors the contributions of immigrants to the United States. Every year, we invest in the graduate education of 30 New Americans- immigrants and the children of immigrants- who are poised to make significant contributions to US society, culture or their academic fields. Each new Fellow receives up to $90,000 in financial support over two years, and they join a lifelong community of New American Fellows. Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study- in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program – in the United States.

Graduate Research Fellowship Program in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

Amount: Stipend of $35,000 usable toward the student’s salary and related costs, and up to $15,000 to cover the student’s tuition and fees, research expenses, and related costs.

Eligibility: Only if the doctoral student’s degree program is a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline; and the student’s proposed dissertation research has demonstrable implications for addressing the challenges of crime and/or the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States.

Description: The Graduate Research Fellowship in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (GRF-STEM) provides awards to accredited academic institutions to support graduate research leading to doctoral degrees in topic areas that are relevant to ensuring public safety, preventing and controlling crime, and ensuring the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States. Applicant academic institutions sponsoring doctoral students are eligible to apply only if the doctoral student’s degree program is a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline; and the student’s proposed dissertation research has demonstrable implications for addressing the challenges of crime and/or the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States.Awards are anticipated to be made to successful applicant institutions in the form of grants to cover fellowships for the sponsored doctoral students. Although the initial award is only for 1 year of funding, each fellowship potentially provides up to 3 years of support usable over a 5-year period, pending NIJ review of continued enrollment and adequate progress. For each year of support, NIJ provides the degree-granting institution a stipend of $35,000 usable toward the student’s salary and related costs, and up to $15,000 to cover the student’s tuition and fees, research expenses, and related costs.
