Whether you’re a new graduate student or entering a new phase of your graduate student career, you can use writing as a powerful tool for understanding your position and guiding your success. All students can benefit from clarity about what is expected of their writing for graduate coursework, research articles, and the thesis/dissertation—and how to make progress toward meeting those expectations. This interactive session with consultants from the Graduate Writing Center will focus on demystifying the intimidating or elusive aspects of “graduate-level writing” by airing just why this writing feels more difficult or foreign than writing in an undergraduate program or on the job. The workshop will introduce you to the concepts of discourse community, genre analysis, metadiscourse, and authorship and provide a sourcebank of questions you can ask of your advisors, labmates, librarians, and others to get yourself better situated as an emerging scholar in your field.

Amy Whitcomb,            Graduate Writing Center      Coordinator
