Developing Your DEI Statement for Academic Job Applications

Why are diversity, equity, and inclusion important in higher education? A job application’s DEI Statement is an opportunity for you to answer that question from your unique perspective, as someone who is informed of relevant issues, engaged in concrete actions, and aspires to leverage a faculty position to make change. Not an autobiography nor an exhaustive list, a strong DEI Statement clearly demonstrates your specific knowledge and efforts through well-articulated and organized reflection. Writing a strong DEI Statement involves many writing tasks. This workshop will focus on generating useful introspective content; identifying rich examples from your teaching, research, and service; and testing different essay structures. Plan to freewrite using prompts and discuss drafts with other participants using a modified rubric.
