SUMMARY:Event and Online Networking
DESCRIPTION:This section is created based on the networking strategies of some of the most strategic networkers in the world and also goes into the science of building rapport and why this is important for the job seeking professional. While this topic tends to be popular\, it seems people are still not using it effectively and thus we have detailed specific action steps job seekers can take\, and specific scripts to use while networking. \nMore information? SUMMARY:Writing Workshop Series: Writing Strategies & Writer’s Block
DESCRIPTION:For this highly hands-on workshop\, expect to learn strategies to employ while pre-writing\, writing\, and revising documents\, such as journal articles\, your thesis\, or even a short email. This workshop is intended for students who know what they need to write and have done the necessary research but may be struggling with getting words on paper or making sure the words on the paper are the ones they really want. Particular focus will be given to practicing the strategies\, so attendees are highly encouraged to bring a project they are working on. \nSo you’ve got a deadline\, you know you need to write something\, ANYTHING\, but the words just aren’t flowing! You’ve followed writing strategies\, and they just aren’t working! For this highly hands-on workshop\, attendees should expect to learn and practice multiple ways of getting past those invisible barriers to writing. Through guided exercises\, attendees should expect to leave the workshop feeling more confident in overcoming writer’s block. As such\, attendees are highly encouraged to bring a project where they are struggling. \nMore information? Visit the event website

SUMMARY:Building A Publishing Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:As academics\, we have been told to write often and as much as we can\, but no one teaches us how to keep track of the many different projects that we may be working on at any given time. As a result\, we are pulled in multiple directions\, and incremental progress made on multiple manuscripts can make it feel like our productivity – and our motivation – is at a standstill. By conceptualizing all of your writing projects as moving through a pipeline\, you can make progress on a daily basis and keep everything flowing towards publication. In this workshop\, you will learn how to: \n• Establish a sustainable daily writing practice \n• Experiment with a tracking system to analyze where to focus your writing and research efforts \n• Make a concrete action plan for moving several projects forward simultaneously \n• Celebrate the process of moving your work from one stage of the pipeline to the next \nMore information? SUMMARY:Submitting Your Thesis and Dissertation
DESCRIPTION:You’ve spent years on your dissertation and it’s time to turn it into the Graduate School. What happens then? Daniel Vickoren and Kelly Caraher from the Graduate School will teach students how to understand and navigate WSU’s thesis and dissertation formatting requirements. Daniel will also give additional tips on the title page\, abstract\, chapter headings\, using previously-published work\, and much more. The WSU librarians Debra Spidal and Talea Anderson will discuss how your dissertation is cataloged\, submitted to ProQuest/UMI\, and made available via the Research Exchange for others to learn about your work. \nMore information? SUMMARY:Workshop and Panel Discussion: The Academic Job Application
DESCRIPTION:With recent government budget cuts throughout the United States and limited funds going to higher education\, the availability of faculty positions have been few and far between. When a faculty position does open up\, competition is high. Although many applicants are qualified\, many applicants do not succeed in their search for a faculty position because they are simply not prepared well enough when they enter the job market. Preparation of a faculty application package goes well beyond sending a resume to an industrial company\, and often requires months of preparation.  This workshop will emphasize the components of a faculty application\, providing hints and tips for each document\, and go through the relative timeline of the faculty search process. Although specific examples will be given from STEM fields\, much of the information presented will be relevant to all disciplines. \nMore information? Visit the event website

SUMMARY:Data Literacy: Busting Myths of Big Data Part 2
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will focus on learning about the what\, when\, how and whys of data.  Data is pervasive these days and like it or not we have to use data to make decisions or others will make them for us.  In this workshop we will start from the basics and talk about types of data and we can say and cannot say about the different types of data.  We will keep it flexible and cover topics that attendees are interested in from the list below.  This is not meant to replace any of your Stats classes\, more of a philosophical overview of making data based decisions. \nMore information? SUMMARY:Interviewing and Negotiating for Industry Careers -Spokane Campus
DESCRIPTION:This topic discusses the strategy of interviewing beyond just answering questions. There is an entire process of preparation for an interview\, besides learning how to answer interview questions. We will detail the entire interview preparation that is required for professionals to demonstrate they are invaluable to a company; from the research to the categories of interview questions\, and the best ways to respond. \nMost jobseekers don’t negotiate even though companies expect them to negotiate. We will cover how companies start negotiations long before the candidate realizes\, to condition the candidate for a lower salary. We will demonstrate how to spot these negotiation techniques and then the order in which a candidate should negotiate so that a candidate can put themselves in a position of strength to negotiate on average 10-15% higher salary. \nMore information?
